By definition, a senior horse is one that is 15 years or older. With horses today living up to 30 or even 40 years, that might seem a bit young to be classified as a senior. However, older horses need special care and nutrients to age gracefully and live a long and happy life.

Caring for a Senior Horse

Talk to your vet often. Make sure your horse is up to date on their vaccinations and overall care.

Check their teeth regularly. Look for hooks, waves, cracks, or other issues. If your horse has teeth problems that keep them from chewing hay, use alternative sources (chopped hay, cubes, senior feeds).

Provide adequate shelter. Especially during cold and wet weather.

Evaluate their body condition often. On a scale of 1-9 (1=poor, 9=extremely fat), try to keep them at a 5 (Moderate).

Feed forage and appropriate nutrients every day. Forage should be 2% of their body weight. Add appropriate feeds as needed for nutrients and calories.
